Ballet Master - Junior Position

Terrassa, Spain

Fundació Ballet de Catalunya (Ballet de Catalunya / BNC) — Terrassa / Barcelona, Spain

We are looking for a talented, rigorous and committed young professional ready to grow within a demanding artistic team.

The Role

We are seeking a Junior Ballet Master to join the permanent artistic team of the Company, working under the supervision of the Artistic Director and the senior Ballet Masters in the technical, artistic and scenic preparation of the dancers. This is a development position, designed for a candidate with a strong technical foundation, initial experience in teaching or artistic assistance, and clear potential to evolve within the structure of the Company.

We are looking for someone with energy, judgement, discipline and genuine artistic curiosity: a person able to learn fast, take responsibility and contribute from day one, while continuing to listen and observe. The position is demanding and formative in equal measure; the successful candidate will work in direct contact with the repertoire, the dancers and the real day-to-day life of a professional company.

Key Responsibilities

Teaching and daily training

  • Deliver Company and/or Trainee Programme classes under the supervision of the senior staff, maintaining a rigorous technical and artistic standard.
  • Assist in the design and delivery of progressive technical plans adapted to the ensemble.
  • Provide individualised feedback to dancers, in particular Trainees, Apprentices and Corps de Ballet.

Rehearsals and repertoire preparation

  • Assist in rehearsals of the classical repertoire and of neoclassical and contemporary works in the Company's catalogue.
  • Lead rehearsals of specific sections, variations and corps de ballet numbers, with growing autonomy as the role consolidates.
  • Learn choreographic material from video sources and contribute to its reconstruction with fidelity to the style, intention and detail of the original.
  • Support senior Ballet Masters and répétiteurs in transmitting the choreographic line, musicality and dramaturgical content of each work.
  • Notate and document changes, casting and rehearsal notes to ensure continuity across sessions.

Music and musicality

  • Work on musicality with the dancers in class and rehearsals as a core artistic value of the Company.
  • Become familiar with the reference scores of the classical repertoire being worked on, and progressively develop a refined sense of musical phrasing.
  • Communicate precisely with the rehearsal pianist regarding tempi, accents and counts.

Production, planning and organisational support

  • Support daily artistic planning: rehearsal call sheets, cast lists, substitutions and internal communications to dancers.
  • Contribute to the preparation of performances and events (galas, premieres, tours, festivals).
  • Coordinate with the technical team (lighting, set, costume, stage management) when needed, ensuring coherence between studio and stage.
  • Take care of the practical aspects of the daily artistic life of the Company (cast changes, dancers' welfare, etc.).

Learning and professional development

  • Actively observe the work of the senior Ballet Masters and of the Artistic Director as part of an ongoing training process.
  • Receive regular feedback aimed at developing pedagogical and artistic practice.
  • Progressively build autonomous artistic judgement and critical thinking applied to repertoire, coaching and casting.

Office and digital tools

  • Use standard office software (word processing, spreadsheets, calendar tools, shared drives) confidently for documentation and internal communication.

Requirements

Experience and training

  • Previous career as a professional dancer, or advanced pre-professional level in a recognised school or company.
  • Between 2 and 5 years of experience as Ballet Master, artistic assistant, répétiteur in training, or equivalent experience as a teacher in a reputable professional school or company.
  • Training at a recognised international school like Vaganova, Royal Ballet School, Paris Opera Ballet School, Bolshoi, John Cranko, Cuban National Ballet School, Princess Grace, or equivalent, or a comparable trajectory.

Technical competencies

  • Solid command of the classical repertoire (Vaganova, Cecchetti, French school or RAD) and familiarity with neoclassical and contemporary repertoire.
  • Ability to physically demonstrate and verbally articulate technique with clarity and precision.
  • Notions of biomechanics, injury prevention and dancer welfare.
  • Ability to learn choreography from video with rigour and fidelity.

Organisational competencies

  • Order, punctuality and the ability to manage multiple parallel tasks in a dynamic environment.
  • Professional-level use of office software (Word, Excel, calendar and scheduling tools, cloud storage).

Valued (additional assets)

  • Experience in production or in supporting performances and events.
  • Basic video and sound editing skills.
  • Basic knowledge of stage lighting.
  • Social media management or artistic communication experience.
  • Notation systems (Benesh, Stepanov, Labanotation) or systematic personal notation.
  • Musical knowledge (scores, structure, phrasing).

Languages

  • English: working professional level (essential).
  • Spanish and/or Catalan: desirable.

Personal qualities

  • Humility to learn, ambition to grow and the rigour to sustain demanding work.
  • Listening skills, developing judgement, and a respectful approach towards dancers and colleagues.
  • Commitment, reliability and availability for scheduled classes, rehearsals, performances and tours, including evenings and weekends.

Conditions

  • Full-time or equivalent contract, according to experience and availability.
  • Salary in line with a junior profile and with sector standards in Spain, with possibilities for evolution within the Company's structure.
  • Real mentorship and accompaniment by the senior artistic team.
  • Main location: Terrassa (Barcelona).
